PAUL FRISBIE: THE BEACH
ARTIST
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's hours and hours
until show time. So I'm on the beach outside the comedy condo, playing in
the sand. I'm recreating the Seven Wonders of the World and various other
ancient buildings. (Modern buildings are too hard. Try building the Eiffel
Tower out of sand and you'll see what I mean.)
The longer I'm at it, the more the tourists are stopping to take pictures.
They think I'm some sort of beach artist. (And that's where I got this
Polaroid.)
Finally this little kid comes over and plunks herself down on top of the
Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I suppose that one must have looked the most
comfortable. And she started rebuilding my creations to suit her own
tastes. She chatted away at a mile a minute while she worked, and we had a
grand old time.
She was the only one who understood the situation. I wasn't making art. I
was just playing in the sandbox.
